God and Hamilton with Guest Kevin Cloud  – Episode 374

GOD_HAMILTON_final.jpgKevinPhotoMF.jpeg

On July 3rd, Hamilton, featuring the original 2015 Broadway production of the smash hip-hop musical, releases on Disney+. Having captured the collective imagination of audiences across the globe, Hamilton has been woven into the cultural fabric of society, shedding light on issues such as immigration, gender equality, diversity, and race. But it has also raised deeply spiritual issues found throughout the life of Alexander Hamilton.

The often forgotten and overlooked Founding Father, Hamilton, an orphan and immigrant from the Caribbean, impacted the government of the early republic as much as, if not more than, any other Founding Father. As Kevin Cloud, a pastor and author, details in his book, God and Hamilton: Spiritual Themes from the Life of Alexander Hamilton and the Broadway Musical He Inspired (Deep River Books), Hamilton’s life story serves as a lens through which we can learn more about God and our ourselves, with themes like grace, faith, shame, doubt, forgiveness, and ultimate redemption.

Royce Lovett – Episode 373

THE VOICE -- "Blind Auditions" Episode 1702 -- Pictured: Royce ...

Royce Lovett has been making music since he was a kid in Tallahassee Florida.

Royce’s star has been steadily rising over the years, but his soothing-yet-gritty reggae/rock performances as a contestant on the last season of NBC’s The Voice made him a recognizable face around the nation. While The Voice viewers saw a distinctly reggae side of Royce, his albums are musically quite diverse, mixing rap, hip-hop, rock and reggae with a whole lot of soul.

I met Royce in 2018 at UTR Media’s Escape To The Lake Event near Chicago Illinois. I found his performance to be like nothing I had ever seen. His music and his message mesmerized every person in the audience that evening and to say the least, I wasn’t too surprised to see him on a national TV show like The Voice.

But it wasn’t just Royce’s voice that left an impression on me, it was his heart and the way that He allowed God to minister through him with the performance he gave. I would still classify it as one of the most meaningful live performances that I personally have experienced.

I invited Royce here today for two reasons, I love his music and I wanted a chance to showcase it on my show, but I also wanted to let him share from his heart as a black man, a parent, a son, and a person of faith living in the United States in 2020.

A Star Trek Conversation with Mike Poteet – Episode 372

Star Trek: The Original Series (TV Series 1966–1969) - IMDb

On September 8, 1966, NBC aired the first episode of a new TV series about a starship on a five year mission of space exploration. That series was called, Star Trek. The first episode told of an endangered shape-shifting, salt-sucking alien posing as a human woman to lure prey to its lair. Over 50 years, nearly 1000 episodes, at least 8 spin-off series, and 13 movies later, we’ve yet to meet any shape shifting salt vampires in real life.

We have however seen a surprising number of ideas and technologies that appeared on the shows over the years have come to pass in the real world. We wanted to talk about some of those things as well and social and theological implications of the show.

Ministry Matters™ | Mike Poteet
Mike Poteet is a Presbyterian minister (PCUSA), currently serving the larger church as a curriculum writer. He, his wife, and their two children live near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

I’ve invited him here today to talk about Star Trek.

So next time, white evangelical leaders, you feel the urge to mouth off that “ALL Lives Matter”…

Thank you to Bruce William for bringing this to my attention.

“It was not ALL lives that were ripped from their homes in Africa.
It was not ALL lives that were separated from families and marched to the West African coast.
It was not ALL lives put into the dank, dark tombs of the slave castles.
It was not ALL lives that were offered as a tithe to the church and accepted by the church.
It was not ALL lives crammed into the European slave ships.
It was not ALL lives laid side by side like cargo in the hull of the ship.
It was not ALL lives that were force fed because they staged hunger strikes.
It was not ALL lives that were casually thrown overboard to be devoured by sharks following the slave ships.
It was not ALL lives that were brought to the New World as slave labor.
It was not ALL lives stripped naked and put on the auction block.
It was not ALL lives for whom the slave auction bell rang, often in rhythm to the church bell.
It was not ALL lives that were bought and sold by God-fearing white American Christians.
It was not ALL lives that were whipped and beaten on the plantations.
It was not ALL lives that were systematically and repeatedly raped by white slave owners.
It was not ALL lives who were daily assaulted in their very identity as those made in the image of God.
It was not ALL lives who were repeatedly told they were less than human.
It was not ALL lives who were diminished by the 3/5 compromise, the Missouri compromise, and the Dred Scott decision.
It was not ALL lives whose communities were wiped out because they sought to build a life for themselves after emancipation.
It was not ALL lives that were told “separate but equal” with equal never being equal.
It was not ALL lives but black lives that hung like strange fruit from Southern trees.
It was not ALL lives, it was Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Roberson, and Carol Denise McNair, four little black lives who were blown up when they bombed a church.
It was not ALL lives that were beset by attack dogs and by fire hoses.
It was not ALL lives but the black lives of Emmitt Till, Medgar Evers, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X who were systematically assassinated.
It was not ALL lives that have been victims of police violence, but it was the black life of Oscar Grant.
It was not ALL lives, it was the black life of Trayvon Martin.
It was not ALL lives, it was the black life of Michael Brown.
It was not ALL lives, it was the black life of John Crawford, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Freddie Gray, Sandra Bland.
It was not ALL lives, it was the black life of Clementa Pinckney, Sharonda Singleton, Tywanza Sanders, Ethel Lance, Susie Jackson, Cynthia Hurd, Myra Thompson, Daniel Simmons, Sr., DePayne Middleton Doctor.
It was not ALL lives, it was the black life of Rekia Boyd.
It was not ALL lives, it was the black life of Laquan McDonald.
It is not ALL lives that are targeted for mass incarceration.
It is not ALL lives that the prison industrial complex exploits.

These historical events did not involve the destruction and death of ALL lives, they were black lives that have been systematically targeted and abused by American society.

So next time, white evangelical leaders, you feel the urge to mouth off that “ALL Lives Matter” — CLOSE your mouth and OPEN your eyes, ears, and minds to get yourself some knowledge.”

Kerri Pomarolli Is A Proverbs 32 Woman – Episode 370

 Kerriphoto9idpb.jpg

Kerri Pomarolli is a national headlining standup comedian who has worked with everyone from Jay Leno, Jim Carrey, Sherri Shepherd, Carol Channing, and Jerry Lewis. She’s been featured on The Tonight Show 29 times, Comedy Central, ABC and more. She is a popular TV host, actor, celebrity correspondent (Showbiz Tonight), currently writing films for the Hallmark Channel, and an “out of the closet” Christian in Hollywood.

As a sought-after comedian living in Hollywood, Kerri understands the pressure to keep up impossible standards and present a perfect image. In her book, Confessions of a Proverbs 32 Woman: How I Went from Messed Up to Blessed Up Without Changing a Single Thing (Harvest House Publishers), Kerri turns the notion of perfection on its head and bravely shares the messiness of her life in her trademark witty style.

She delves into the struggles of the modern woman tired of trying and failing to live up to Pinterest-looking, air-brushed, and Insta-filtered “real life” role models telling her she’s not quite good enough. Kerri discusses and encourages readers with two things they can hold onto for longer than their smartphone: genuine self-awareness and humble God-awareness.

Be In My Next Music Video…From Your Home

Hello Friends,

On June 6th we are shooting a music video for my song, “Love Our Enemies” and I really want you to be in it…FROM YOUR HOME.

My hope was to have lots of friends gather together to shoot this music video but in these strange times in which we are living, that isn’t going to be possible.

However, my video director and I think we have a way to have lots of you in this music video.

We are inviting you to come together (separately) to create a virtual choir from inside our own homes. We want as many of you as possible to take a video of yourself (or even your whole family if you can) singing along on the choruses of “Love Our Enemies.”

Follow these simple instructions to make your video at home and have it added to our music video.

HOW TO JOIN

  1. Download the FREE chart and track from the following Dropbox link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/235jfs8zug8l50o/AADe4nIUJHSVr1_X5ol7luHHa?dl=0
  2. Record a video of yourself (using your phone is fine) singing along to the track or even playing along on a instrument. Make sure you’re listening via earphones and only recording your voice or instrument – not the track.
  3. Submit your video like this:
  4. Tag and share this post with your church choir, friends, and family!
  5. *Deadline for submissions is Saturday, June 6th at Midnight (CST)

If you need a better idea of what we mean by virtual choir, take a look at this Virtual Choir Video that our friends at Lifeway Worship made for Palm Sunday this year: https://youtu.be/fsIPErFkvBc

If you have any questions, email me at Rick@RickLeeJames.com.

Let’s make a great music video together.

Blessings,

Rick Lee James
