This week marked the end of the 2017 General Assembly for the Church of the Nazarene, held every four years in Indianapolis Indiana.
I had the privilege of being on two different panels at the Spirit and Truth mini conference while at General Assembly. The conference was sponsored by Nazarene Theological Seminary and the NNU Wesley Society.
In the links below you will find the recordings from both sessions, also featuring Andrea Garcia and Brannon Hancock.
We hope you can join us in Indianapolis for Spirit and Truth on June 23rd. Come for an afternoon of conversation and learning about the gift of communal worship in the local church from educators, musicians, and worship pastors. Our gathering will include a panel of worship leaders and some practical workshops to help equip and encourage pastors and laity in their local church. The cost is $20.

It is my great honor to be one of over a hundred leaders selected to write essays for a book called Renovating Holiness. I’m so grateful to editors, Thomas Jay Oord and Joshua Broward, not only for including me among these amazing leaders from around the world, but also for taking the time to put together such an unprecedented and needed resource for holiness denominations. In trying to figure out the best way to review a book like this with so many diverse authors, I decided the best thing to do might be to let the authors speak for themselves by including some snapshots from some of my very favorite selections of the book. I would encourage anyone to read this book but I especially would recommend it to young people who have become disheartened with the Church of the Nazarene, wondering if there is a place for them in a holiness denomination in the 21st century. I believe these essays will strengthen our journey as a follower of Christ and help us discover where we are as a denomination. As a minister in the Church of the Nazarene, I give you my highest recommendation.
These excerpts are by no means the only great parts of the book, they are simply moments that stood out to me while I was reading Renovating Holiness. I also included the first page of the essay I wrote, hoping that all of these excerpts will make you want to read more. These excerpts were written by
Brannon Hancock, Catherine Lebese, Chad Maxson, Craig Drurey, Dick Eugenio, Donnie Miller, Emily JoAnn Haynes, Frank Mills, Greg Arthur, Hank Spaulding, Jacob Lett, Jamie Gates, Janine King, Jason Rowinski, Joe Gorman, Jon Middendorf, Megan Pardue, Michael Scarlett, Myra Oomit, Nathan Napier, Rick Lee James, RJ Strickland, Rusty Brian, Ryan Patrick McGlaughlin, Ryan Scott, and Thomas Jay Oord.

sell all of It’s 2015 and for that reason I need to sell all of the Rick Lee James products that didn’t sell in 2014 or else be charged a storage fee from Amazon.com. Everything Rick Lee James is drastically reduced until February including DVD’s Hardcover Books, Paperback Books, and CD’s. This is the most inexpensive place to buy my stuff on the web until the end of the month so please tell your friends. Maybe even buy some for your friends. Enjoy!
I hope that this update finds you well. The advent season is upon us again and with it, as always, is much busyness. In addition to the normal Yuletide events this year, This year I add recording a new album to the schedule. This Thursday I will begin my drive to Nashville Tennessee and on Friday morning we will begin tracking the new album. I am so excited about this as I’m sure you are well aware. I have dreamed of an opportunity like this for so many years and God is finally open the door. I am so blessed to work with Lifeway Worship, Producer Craig Adams, A list musicians, and the top engineers in Nashville on this project.
I believe we have come up with a title that encapsulates this project. We think the title will be Hymns, Prayers, and Invitations. I am so blessed by so many of you given how did your resources to make this album the reality. Make God bless you in this holiday season and renew your faith in Christ. I covet your prayers as we begin this recording process and I ask you to pray for others will be renewed in their faith as a result of this endeavor. While we want to make great music, the goal is to reveal Jesus and the present reality of the kingdom of God.
I’ll do my best to update you on line through Facebook and Twitter (@RickLeeJames) while I am in Nashville with pictures and more as I am able. I feel very blessed today and I can’t wait to share the songs with you as a complete collection.
I have some incredible news to share with you about the record I’ll be recording this December in Nashville. I’ve only shared this news with investors and some family up to this point, but am now ready to share it with the rest of you.
A few weeks ago, I initiated a partnership with LifeWay Worship that will get me a long way down the road toward the accomplishment of a new album. Because of LifeWay Worship’s involvement, I will be able to record this album at one of the best studios in Nashville with A-list players and engineers. The investment of LifeWay Worship, alongside funds donated via GoFundMe.com and my own personal investment, is making the dream become reality!
Here’s What This Means:
Funding to record and mix the album has been secured in full.
All songs recorded will be featured on my solo album and will be be repurposed by LifeWay Worship to introduce songs and arrangements at lifewayworship.com (charts, tracks, lyric files will be offered there).
All songs included on the project will be pitched to a variety of publishers, labels, and artists for placement in choral print and/or on any number of 3rd party album releases.
All this is to say, through God’s provision and generosity expressed through LifeWay Worship and an amazing team of partners at www.gofundme.com/hymns, we’re going to make an amazing record which has the potential be used as a music resource for churches internationally. I can hardly believe that God has blessed me with this opportunity 7 years after I accepted His invitation to make music for the church on a broader scale. 7 is the number in scripture that represents God so I see this as a tangible sign of His guiding hand.
These songs were birthed out of my local congregation’s times of worship at First Church of the Nazarene in Springfield Ohio. I am so blessed that we will be able to share our musical expressions of worship on a larger scale using ancient and modern hymns. I can’t thank my producer, Craig Adams, enough for investing so much of himself into this project. He and I share a common calling to equip churches for worship. Authentic worship is what we pray will be experienced by congregations worldwide as they sing these songs.
Additional funding is still needed in order to accomplish album design, photography, printing costs, manufacturing, and miscellaneous expenses. Any additional funds collected atGoFundMe.com/hymnswill help us achieve completion of the entire project. Thank you to all of you who have already given to this project and to those of you who still plan on partnering with us. I give all praise to our Glorious God and I pray He will use these songs of worship to glorify Himself and to further His Kingdom here on earth. Bless the Lord at all times!
This week I was interviewed by WorshipLinks.us for their web site. Worship Links isa hand-picked collection of the best worship resources on the web so needless to say I was honored that they wanted to talk with me. I encourage you not only to read the interview I was featured in, but especially if you are a music pastor, check out all of their great resources. It’s a truly awesome place on the web.
I hope that you are all enjoying your week and that God is blessing you as you draw near to him in this Spring time of year. It always reminds me of newness and life. God is always doing new things in His world.
This has been a year of new things in my life. Most of you know that I released my first book this year and I have been so pleased with the response. Getting endorsements and encouragement form people I’ve admired for so long like Michael Card, Brian Zahnd, Brett McCracken, and Matt Litton just to name a few has been a dream come true. I’ve also received some wonderful review on Amazon from new readers and I just feel so blessed.
The reason I’m writing is that a new opportunity has arisen which could be a real help in getting the book into the hands of more people. Dan Gummel is a talented voice actor who is very interested in narrating an audio version of my book. In order to cover his expenses and studio time I would need to raise about $1500.00 before distribution costs. Since we are in an audio/video society that frankly doesn’t read very much anymore, I feel like this audio book could be used to reach people who might not sit down to read a book, but would give it a listen in their car or while they exercise using their mobile devices.
Today, I’m simply asking if there is any interest level in helping to fund an audio book of Out of the Depths: A Songwriter’s Journey Through The Psalms. I’d love to end each chapter with the song that corresponds allowing people to not only hear the chapter on the Psalm but then respond to it with music. I would love the chance to make this available, but I want to make sure it isn’t just me.
What are your thoughts? Any interest in supporting this endeavor or should I just leave it as is. I’d appreciate your thoughts and prayers on this as people who have been such a blessing to me in the past. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. I’m not asking you to give today, I really just want to know your thoughts.
Here is a sample of Dan reading a portion of the book so you can have an idea of what it will sound like.
