  1. Other than acoustic guitar, the greatest instrument for ‘folk music’ would be the banjo or harmonica. Most likely the banjo, because it’s very hard to sing while playing the harmonica. The banjo is perhaps the only truly ‘American’ instrument. Derived from the African Banjar (a three stringed instrument made from a gourd) brought to America by slaves; the banjo developed into the drum head (with or without a resonator back) with a stringed neck we know today. In either four or five string configuration can be strummed, picked or ‘flailed’ as the player sings or tells a story. Notables who used the banjo in ‘folk music’ are: Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and the Kingston Trio.
